Savory Flavors in Pink
In honor of breast cancer awareness month, the Savory Flavors crew wore pink throughout October. We purchased our pink shirts from Donna Jean’s, a local clothing boutique owned by Arissa Anderson. Arissa emblazoned the shirts with a pumpkin design and the statement “In October We Wear Pink.” We were excited to wear these shirts throughout the month, not only to recognize breast cancer awareness but also to support a fellow local business.
Both Savory Flavors and Donna Jean’s collected donations throughout October. In addition to generous monetary donations, people donated journals, word search books, chapstick, hard candy, gum, pens, and fuzzy socks to fill blessing bags that were distributed at the Blueridge Cancer Center. With the combined efforts of the two businesses, volunteers packed nearly 200 blessing bags for cancer patients. We hope that the patients found comfort in receiving these bags and know that they are in our prayers.
On October 10, 2023, Savory Flavors teamed up with Donna Jean’s once again to host a “Pink Party” to celebrate local breast cancer survivors. The party was held in Savory Flavors’ dining room, which was adorned with pink decorations. The two businesses came together to provide refreshments and put on a fashion show to display clothes from Donna Jean’s. Of course, our models were lovely local breast cancer survivors.
Before the main event, guest speaker Melissa Stacy, a local physician assistant, gave a presentation about prevention. She discussed risk factors, prevention methods, and the importance of getting examined. Although a breast cancer diagnosis is scary, Melissa maintained that there is hope: “Breast cancer survival rates have increased so significantly because of early detection and prevention.”
After Melissa’s informative presentation, the fashion show began! Eight breast cancer survivors walked the pink carpet runway. Arissa announced each of the models as they walked, telling the stories of their diagnoses, how many rounds of treatments and surgeries they endured, and how many years they have been cancer-free. Alongside the beautiful clothing from Donna Jean’s, the survivors modeled their courage and strength. These women have had a significant impact on the lives around them. It was an honor to listen to their stories and see how far they have come.
Everyone at Savory Flavors is thankful for the generous members of our community who donated and attended the Pink Party. It was a joy to work with Arissa from Donna Jean’s, and we hope to collaborate again in the future. Of course, we would like to extend a special thank you to all the survivors who came out and shared their stories. We are inspired by all of you!
